Few things are more fun than zipping along the coast of Maui on a sleek motorized scooter. This convenient method of island travel brings an added element of excitement to your visit, making it easy to get from place to place while creating enjoyable memories to share with friends and relatives when you get back home.

A few things to remember before taking your Maui Scooter Shack moped or scooter rental out on the road:

Choose the right scooter for your outing and your skill level. If you’re only planning to ride around Kihei to enjoy our local sights and in-town activities, one of our 49cc scooters should be just perfect. Either our standard 49cc scooter rental or our 49cc Pit Bull moped rental should be fun and easy to ride, even if you’re new to riding. These scooters get great gas mileage, too, at 70+ MPG, leaving you more money to spend on other, more exciting things. You won’t need a motorcycle license to ride our 49cc models, either. More experienced riders, who do have motorcycle licenses and who may prefer to ride beyond the outskirts of town, will find our 150cc scooters to be their best bet. These scooters seat two people, making it easier for those who prefer not to “drive” and have an experienced rider to serve as their “chauffeur.”

Make sure you’re comfortable riding before heading out. Remember that you’ll be sharing the road with other vehicles, many of which will be larger than yours. So, maintaining proper control of your scooter will be important. At Maui Scooter Shack, we make sure that all inexperienced riders receive a personal riding lesson to give them the skills and confidence they need to ride safely and enjoy their outing. So, even if you’re a novice, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be able to relax and start having fun in no time!

Wear the helmet provided with your moped rental. For your safety, every Maui Scooter Shack moped and scooter rental comes with a helmet. But, unless you wear it, that helmet won’t do you any good. The higher the speed and the farther you’ll be riding, the more important your helmet will be, but do yourself a favor and wear it anyway. Whether you’re riding inside or outside of town, you’ll be freer to focus on having fun.

Wear casual, comfortable clothes. Clothing that allows you ease of movement will make riding your moped rental easier and more enjoyable. You may also find it more comfortable to wear long pants or jeans, though this isn’t really necessary and many people prefer to wear less when visiting the Islands. If your trek will be lengthy, you might want to bring a light jacket or shirt along in case the breeze picks up or in the event that you end up needing a little extra sun protection. Whatever you do decide to wear, just make sure it’s something that will let you forget yourself and have a carefree time.

Don’t forget your sunscreen! If you’ll be out and about, riding around the island and stopping to see the sights for hours on end, you won’t want to ignore protecting your skin from excessive exposure to the sun’s rays. While most of us believe a tan is beautiful, we all know a burn isn’t — and that it won’t add one bit of fun to our tropical vacation. So, pay as much attention to keeping your skin protected as you do to your invigorating moped ride and the amazing sights you’ll see all over the island. You’ll enjoy yourself so much more if you do. Wearing lip balm that contains sunscreen can also help prevent sun- or wind-burned lips.

Following the above suggestions can help you get more out of your Maui Scooter Shack moped rental while experiencing a more exciting visit to Hawaii’s Valley Isle.
